The Center for Democracy and Human Rights (CDD) is a Mozambican civil society organization dedicated to promoting and defending human rights, strengthening democracy, and building inclusive social justice. With a strategic presence throughout the country, the CDD develops community impact programs, applied research, public advocacy, and independent monitoring, linking local dynamics to national agendas and promoting citizen participation, transparency, and public accountability. Its commitment is to contribute to a more just, democratic, and dignified Mozambique for all.
To inspire and drive action to protect human rights, strengthen democracy, and promote justice.
A resilient Mozambique, founded on justice, strengthened by democracy, and dedicated to the protection of human rights.
Strategic areas of our work

To increase citizen participation in decision-making and strengthen public institutions so that they become more transparent, accountable, and sensitive to human rights.

To reduce the factors that drive violence and strengthen local and regional mechanisms for prevention, protection, and social recovery through rights-centered and justice-based approaches.

The development of natural resources and major transportation corridors define livelihoods, shape local power, and influence political stability. Without rights-based governance, transparent revenue management, and inclusive value chains, extractive growth becomes exclusionary—marked by land loss, environmental degradation, appropriation by elites, and recruitment markets that fuel conflict.

To ensure that private economic activity — especially in critical mineral value chains and large-scale projects — respects human rights, generates equitable local benefits, and is subject to effective accountability mechanisms, in accordance with the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGPs) and the Voluntary Principles on Security and Human Rights (VPSHR).
Visits to the CDD consist of meetings aimed at strengthening partnerships, sharing experiences, and learning firsthand about the CDD’s work in promoting democracy and human rights.
The CDD is composed of a multidisciplinary team committed to human rights, democracy, and social justice. We combine technical knowledge, field experience, and ethical commitment to promote sustainable change in service to Mozambican communities.
