Mozambique: Wave of Lynchings Linked to Disinformation and Superstitious Beliefs Exposes State Fragility in Guaranteeing Law and Order

At least 60 people have been killed and 111 injured in acts of violence recorded in recent weeks in Mozambique, linked to the spread of rumours about the alleged disappearance or shrinking of male genital organs through acts of witchcraft, according to figures released by the Mozambican police.
The incidents were initially reported in Cabo Delgado province before spreading to Nampula, Zambezia and Manica. In several locations, individuals accused of practicing “genital magic” were subjected to mob attacks, beatings and lynchings by members of the public.
